It's early in the 2013 season, yet Derrek Wilson has dominated the Pure Stock division at Humboldt Speedway. Many think he might be unstoppable. Yet, as they say, every superman has his Kryptonite. For Wilson, this week at least, that was Jeremy Willard.
In a really tight feature race, Levi Phillips, Donnie Devers, Ben Haddox and Willard all challenged for the lead that Wilson held. Wrecks and mechanical failures changed the course of the race over time, and it came down to Willard vs. Wilson. Willard made a clean pass late in the race, taking the checkered flag as he held Wilson to second. Devers finished third, Brad Carrol came from dead last to fourth, and Eldon McIntosh finished out ther top five.
Scott Stuart remains undefeated in Factory Stock for 2013, but not unchallenged. Jay Lamons, Jr. offered up this seasons best challenge so far before a glancing collision with another driver apparently caused suspension damage to his race car and relegated him to runner up. Newcomer Adam Popp finished a strong third, while David Matlock and Clint Drake rounded out the top five.
For the first time since late 2011, Riley Whitworth found his groove and rocketed to a feature win in the Ray's Metal Depot B-Mod division. Whitworth led wire to wire, despite serious heat from runner up Tyler Kidwell. Jake Richards bested early race adversity to claim third, with Curt Drake fourth and Jason Thurman fifth.
And then there was Whitey Folk. after a blown motor cancelled a shot at the USMTS A main last week, Folk was back, out of retirement and stronger than ever with a ride that seemed to be on rails, as he wired the field in the USRA Modified feature. Ryan McAmincet wrestled the second spot away from Cody Schniepp, who finished third. Travis Smith was fourth, Luke Driskell fifth.
