He “retired” last year. Sold off all his stuff, left the game. Then, his uncle calls: “Come drive for me!” So, he does. Has some early success in 2013, then slumps a bit. Loads up Friday night, heads to the Hummer. Car falls off the trailer going down the road.  Now what?

Like all good athletes, Whitey Folk knows adversity, and laughs in its face. Thus, when the green flag dropped in this week’s McCarthy Auto Group/USRA Modified feature, all the other stuff no longer mattered. What did matter was tracking down a wicked fast Ryan McAnnich  and wrestling away the lead away. Then, it was pure speed, driving to victory. On a track where three wide racing was the norn, and four wide was almost possible, Josh Everhart  secured the second spot, with McAnnich an oh so close third. Coming from a tenth starting spot, Jess Folk, Jr. blasted his way into fourth, while Luke Driskell claimed fifth.

If rubbin’ is racin’, there was a whole lotta racin’ going on in Factory Stocks. Jeremy Wilson, 2011 points champ, returned to his old form,  driving away with a wire to wire win while those behind him traded paint. Tyler James finished second. Jay Lamons, Jr. had a flat, changed it, and roared back for third. David Matlock took fourth, Clint Drake was fifth, and also the last car to finish the race!

Things were somewhat less rough and tumble in the Ray’s Metal Depot B-Mod feature, however winner Jeremy Chambers and runner up Jimmie Davis did stage a classic duel that brought fans to their feet. Riley Whitworth mixed it up with the leaders as well, but ended third. Tyler Kidwell claimed the fourth spot, with Matthew Lang finishing fifth.

While Derrek Wilson cruised to victory in the Whitworth Construction Pure Stock feature, those behind him were busy racing hard. Donnie Devers laid claim to runner up, with Stetson Deets running an impressive third. Newcomer Wayne Johnson was fourth, Dustin Lawrence was fifth.

Half time this week was the Kids Night bicycle race. Three age groups competed. The top three in each group were:

6 and under: Logan Thorton, Brock Michael, and Caden Vink.

7 to 9: Briggs Michael, Carson Letterman, and Logan Coulter

10 to 13: Corbin Smith, Trent Wilson, Chance Gentry.

Memorial Weekend is coming, with races both Friday and Sunday. While the NCRA Modifieds won’t be there Sunday, big money will, in all classes. Make plans now to attend.
