CASH MONEY SUPER LATE MODELS TOP HUMBOLDT SPEEDWAY FALL SPECTACULAR!

By Scott Lee Stewart

October 2, 2020

A crisp October Friday night at Humboldt Speedway was the setting for the first ever appearance of the relatively new Cash Money Super Dirt Series Late Models Series on The Hummer High Banks. Designed to be a grass roots, “more affordable” answer to the oft televised mega expensive Late Models seen on TV, the Cash Money series fielded a group of 24 extremely capable cars and drivers from the Tri-State area that provided an especially enjoyable program for area race fans.

“Diamond” Jim Body traveled to The Hummer from Diamond, Mo. to exchange the lead several times in wheel to wheel combat with several other contenders before battling back to capture the feature win. Aurora, Mo.’s Justin Wells finished the intense battle a close runner up, with Chuck Comer of Springfield, Mo. third. Fourth spot went to another Diamond, Mo. pilot, Jim Body III, with Eddie Schwope, Jr. out of St. Joseph, Mo. rounding out the top five finishers of the 30 lap event.

Late Models were the Icing on the Cake so to speak, as a full slate of local action hero’s competed on the Humboldt clay as well.

Ryan “Fireball” Smith of Moran, Ks. captured his second Hummer feature win of the season in the highly competitive Love’s Travel Stops Midwest Modified division feature. Smith led early, yielded to eventual runner up Riley Duncan of Lockwood, Mo., then came storming back to claim a thrilling win. Nevada, Mo. driver Carter Brownsberger started dead last in the 20 car field and blitzed his way to third. Fourth spot went to Jon Westhoff of Chanute, with Humboldt’s Jackson McGowen fifth.

The Home Savings Bank Factory Stock feature prize was claimed by up and coming Brian Knisley of Coffeyville, Ks. Scott Collins of Humboldt finished second in the event, with Scott Lucke of Humboldt third, Matt Powell of Independence, Ks. fourth, and Trey Stipp of Humboldt fifth.

Ray’s Metal Depot B-Mod feature competition saw Ryan Gillmore, a talented driver out of Springfield, Mo. taking home the winners purse. Ryan Phillips of Osage City was in hot pursuit, and scored the second spot. Kenton Allen mounted a late race challenge that netted the third place slot, with Ethan Issacs of Bonner Springs fourth and Brian McGowen of Pittsburg fifth.

Of late, Topeka, Ks driver Brian Luthi has been on a Humboldt hot streak, and tonight’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Sport Compact feature was no exception, as Luthi left the balance behind once again. Clint Haigler of Humboldt finished second, Earlton driver Allen Jesseph was third, while Maddyson Tyler of Parsons claimed fourth, with Johnathan Culler of Colony in fifth.

Veteran Humboldt racer Dan Daniels captured his first Whitworth Construction Street Stock feature of the year in commanding fashion, while Chanute’s Dennis Bishop was second, and Joe Abrams of Topeka took third.

There are two more special events scheduled for Humboldt Speedway in November, 2020. Further details forthcoming soon.
